Thailand is a complex mixture. An hours drive north of Bangkok is Ayutthaya and here the elephant plays a central role in mythology. Two brothers fight a duel on elephants and both were killed. The surviving brother built a memorial to his dead brother. There is a treasure buried in the bowels of the building. Climb deep down inside it and see that frescoes that line the walls.
The treasures were put in a museum for safe keeping. It is a fabulous collection of gold and jewels. The gold elephant of ayuthhaya is a masterpiece of the goldsmiths art and is spectacular when it was built centuries ago. It is beautifully finished. The elephant is a majestic symbol in Thailand and may represent the brothers duelling.
