Snapper Rocks Shocks
There have been more shocks than g-strings at the Snapper Rocks WCT Surfing Contest so far. Yesterday, rookie grommet Julian Wilson beat the massively unbeatable Kelly Slater in the heats. Kelly Slater has been shoved into a sudden-death heat of the famous Gold Coast surfing contest. Julian Wilson won his fairy story entrance into round threee.
The results may have been due to the sloppy conditions and Kelly Slater himself admitted that he was rusty. In round two, Kelly Slater will compete against hyped Aboriginal professional surfer Dale Richards. Dale Richards was beaten in the first round by champion Andy Irons and South African wunderkind Greg Emslie.
The other major upset was that Andy Irons, the world number two surfer, was caned by Greg Emslie, and punted to the sudden-death heats. Superhero Mark Occhilipo and Luke Munro were also relegated to the round two heats.
Local Gold Coast survivors included Dean Morrison, Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning, and Josh Kerr. They all went through to round three with smashing round one victories. My hope is that Mick Fanning wins and goes on to take the world title.
