September Events worldwide

Arizona Burning Man Festival

The Burning Man Festival in Arizona is held in September and October every year and must be the most bizarre festival in the world. The burning man festival began as a beach party in the 1980’s and now more than twenty thousand people come to partake of the burning man festival. At the burning man festival, people do whatever they like. The smut shack epitomises the vibe, and festival goers have a strong desire for something new.

And there is the giant man to be burnt. At the burning man festival, there are no spectators, only participants. They burn the giant man to get rid of all the bad luck that is accumulated throughout the year. As the burning man falls down, the people dance around and celebrate the renewal of spirit.

Festival of San Miguel Bolivia

In Bolivia, the Festival of San Miguel is held on the 29th September every year. The statue of San Miguel gets paraded through town, there is dancing in national costumes, brass bands play, people eat ice cream and drink beer. The devils fight with the angels - it is a symbolic fight of good versus evil. In the village, they fight with their fists, it is called tincan fights. When blood is spilt it is an offering to the mother earth and ensures good harvests.

Goroka Show New Guinea Highlands

The Goroka Show in the highlands of new guinea brings together thirty different tribes to display their dances and customs. The mud men come to town with their clay masks. It costs about fifteen kina to get into the Goroka Show which holds traditional dances in September on Even years. The Goroka show is a mad display of traditional costumes and started as a way to stop the tribal fighting - instead, they now dance against each other instead of throwing spears. The skeleton men are painted to look like skeletons and dance with spears and bows and arrows.

Fox Glacier New Zealand

The Fox Glacier is accessible all year round but it is best to go in the spring. The Fox glacier is five hours from Queenstown in the south island. It costs $45 for a helicopter ride, or on foot for $17 for a guided trip. So get those crampons on your boots and start climbing the fox glacier to the hut on top of the glacier. You will need a guide - there are tunnels under the glacier which moves about fifteen foot a day. Watch out for the crevasses and the dangerous holes. Climb inside the caves under the glacier. It is like a fantasy world. It is a four hour trek to the Chancellor hut which costs only a few dollars - book through the Department of Conservation. The hut is like a luxury pad with cooking facilities, beds, and emergency radio. Wake up in the morning to an icy bath, feel the fresh air and walk to the top of the mountain so see the spectacular views above the tree line. The sun is out and the snow is cold. It is perfect.
