The convicts first built houses along the ridges above The Rocks in Sydney and then along laneways that pre-date the streets of old Sydney. For the first time since 1998 the archeological dig in the Rocks was open to the public recently. Many people can trace their ancestry back to this site and to the Rocks in general. The Rocks could be said to be the birthplace of modern Australia.
More than seven hundred and fifty thousand archeological items or artefacts have been excavated at the dig site at the rocks discovery museum which is situated between Cumberland Street and Gloucester Street.
