The Danube River
The Danube river rises in WEstern europe around about forty eight degrees north latitude and flows for most of its length through eastern europe, reaching the black sea at about forty five degrees north latitude. The Summer climate along the danube ranges from temperate in WEst Germany to hot at the delta. Weather conditions for canoeing along the danube river may vary considerably, even from day to day, with cool rainy days being succeeded by hot sunny ones.
Clothes for canoeing along the danube river should be comfortable and not so tight they rub anywhere - canoeing on the danube is a very active pasttime. One or two warm layers are essential, plus two or three changes of clothing, to allow wet ones to dry. A waterproof covering - anorak, parka, or similar - is essential. As regards health issues when canoeing down the danube, innoculations are not necessary, though most of the eight countries en route will require a smallpox vaccination from anyone coming from an infected area.
Passport requirements on the Danube
Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, yugoslavia, do not require visas from british subjects. The other countries do. US visas are needed for everywhere except for Germany and Austria.
Currency for Canoeing Trip on the Danube
In each of the eight countries along the danube river, the local unit of currency is divided into one hundred smaller units. In the eastern european countries there are strict regulations governing the amount of local money which may be brought in or taken out. Most European travellers cheques are readily accepted in most places. But one should not rely on being able to change a travellers check in some remote place like a delta village.
